It was looking like Alex Michelsen’s day in Dallas — until it wasn’t. The American had an early lead and was dominating the run of play, but veteran Cam Norrie rallied back to steal the thunder in Dallas, notching a 2-6, 7-6 (1), 6-1 victory over the No 7 seed to advance to the second round of the Dallas Open at the Ford Center at The Star on Tuesday night.

Norrie, ranked No 63, will play the winner of the match between American wildcard Reilly Opelka and Kazakh Alexander Shevchenko next.

Michelsen hit eight more winners (35 to 27) and won four more points (94 to 90) than Norrie, but the Brit won the more important won down the stretch as he waltzed through the third set.

“To be honest he was playing unbelievable,” Norrie said. “I was giving him a lot of free points and playing really slow. I was way more nervous than him and it took me way too long to settle into the match. Actually that game at 4-3, when I got broken, for me I was finally able to calm down and stop making excuses to myself and just play.

“I played an unbelievable tiebreak and an unbelievable third set. I gave him nothing.”
