Tien’s extraordinary Australian Open run continues with victory over Moutet to make last 16

American qualifier Learner Tien defeated Frenchman Corentin Moutet 7-6 (10), 6-3, 6-3 to advance to the last 16 of the Australian Open at Melbourne Park.

The 18-year-old American is quickly putting together what could very well be a career-launching run in Melbourne.

Having so memorably taken down three-time former finalist and Grand Slam champion Daniil Medvedev in the second round across five brutal sets, Tien has backed up that stunning result with a professional, mature and composed performance against an established and experienced talent in Moutet.

The first set was very close, with the young American clinching it 12-10 in a gripping tiebreak – another sign of this player’s fearless ability to play lights out tennis when the stakes are highest.

The final two sets were comfortable for Tien, as he closed out yet another chapter of this remarkable Australian Open run on his debut appearance at a Grand Slam.

Tien, ranked No 121, will play the winner of the match between Italian Lorenzo Sonego and Hungarian Fabian Marozsan next.

The 19-year-old American won against Argentinian Camilo Ugo Carabelli (4-6, 7-6 (3), 6-3, 5-7, 6-4) and Russian Daniil Medvedev, the No 5 seed (6-3, 7-6 (4), 6-7 (8), 1-6, 7-6 (7)) ahead of his victory.

Earlier in the tournament, Moutet, ranked No 69, edged out Australian Alexei Popyrin, the No 25 seed (4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 6-4) and American qualifier Mitchell Krueger (4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (3), 6-4).
