Australian Open: Rune battles past Berrettini to reach third round

Dane Holger Rune, the No 13 seed, edged out Italian Matteo Berrettini 7-6 (3), 2-6, 6-3, 7-6 (6) to move into the third round of the Australian Open at Melbourne Park.
The Dane was made to work hard by former Wimbledon finalist, with big-serving Berrettini comfortably taking the second set to draw the scores level at one set apiece.
Yet Rune was thoroughly impressive in the final two sets, taking the third with some excellent displays of returning to break the huge serve of the Italian before showing his mettle to come through another tight tiebreak in the fourth and final set.
The world No 13, will face Serb Miomir Kecmanovic in the next round.
The 21-year-old Dane won against Chinese Zhizhen Zhang (4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4) ahead of his victory.
In the previous round of the first Grand Slam tournament in 2025, Berrettini, ranked No 34, defeated Cameron Norrie (6-7 (4), 6-4, 6-1, 6-3).
