Australian Open: Giron battles past Etcheverry in five to make third round

American Marcos Giron reached the third round of the Australian Open by winning against Argentinian Tomas Martin Etcheverry 7-5, 3-6, 7-5, 3-6, 6-4 at Melbourne Park.

Giron, ranked No 46, will face the winner of the match between Italian Jannik Sinner, the top seed, and Australian wildcard Tristan Schoolkate next.

In the previous round of the first Grand Slam tournament in 2025, the American edged out German Yannick Hanfmann (2-6, 7-5, 6-1, 7-5).

Etcheverry, ranked No 38, defeated Italian Flavio Cobolli, the No 32 seed (6-7 (8), 6-3, 7-5, 6-1) in the previous round of the first Grand Slam tournament in 2025.
