WTA Adelaide: Shnaider moves into last eight as Vondrousova retires

The Russian will play the winner of the match between Tunisian wildcard Ons Jabeur and Kazakh Yulia Putintseva in the next round

Russian Diana Shnaider, the No 6 seed, reached the quarter-finals of the Adelaide International when former Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova retired during their second round match on Wednesday.

Shnaider, ranked No 13, led 4-6, 1-1 when Vondrousova, ranked No 39, pulled out at the Memorial Drive Tennis Park. The Czech woman was playing her first WTA event since Wimbledon last July due to shoulder surgery.

The 20-year-old Russian will face the winner of the match between Tunisian wildcard Ons Jabeur and Kazakh Yulia Putintseva next.

The Russian defeated qualifier Katerina Siniakova (6-3, 0-6, 6-0) in the previous round of the tournament while Vondrousova won against Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova (6-4, 6-7 (4), 6-2).
