Nishikori overcomes Shapovalov in Hong Kong Open first round

Kei Nishikori won against Denis Shapovalov 6-2, 6-3 on Tuesday. He’ll play No 3 seed Karen Khachanov in the next round

Japanese wildcard Kei Nishikori defeated Canadian Denis Shapovalov 6-2, 6-3 to move into the second round of the Hong Kong Open at the Victoria Park Tennis Centre on Tuesday.

Nishikori used less than an hour to overcome Shapovalov in straight sets.

He broke the Canadian four times, saving two break points on his serve, and benefitted from the latter’s 25 unforced errors.

Nishikori, ranked No 106, will face No 3 seed Karen Khachanov next.
