Brisbane Open: Monfils into second round

Frenchman Gael Monfils advanced to the second round of the Brisbane Open by defeating American qualifier Nishesh Basavareddy 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 at the Queensland Tennis Centre on Tuesday.

Monfils and Basavareddy tussled for an hour, 51 minutes, exchanging quality rallies.

The Frenchman eventually came out on top on the back of an impressive 18 aces, averaging 77 percent on first-serve points and 64 percent on second-serve return. Monfils was broken thrice by the youngsters but he converted five break points to advance.

Monfils, ranked No 55, will play the winner of the match between Serb Novak Djokovic, the top seed, and Australian wildcard Rinky Hijikata next.
