Japanese Aoi Ito, the No 7 seed, reached the second round of the Canberra Open by winning against Russian Maria Timofeeva 6-4, 7-5 at the Canberra Tennis Centre.
Ito, ranked No 126, will play Belarusian Aliaksandra Sasnovich next.
