“I still have the goal of winning a Grand Slam title” – Bencic
The Swiss woman returned to the tour last month six months after giving birth to her first child
Swiss Belinda Bencic, who returned to the tour in November six months after giving birth to her first child, says she still has the goal to win a Grand slam title. But the 27-year-old added that she is extremely satisfied at the same time with her career, which included winning the Tokyo Olympic gold medal.
“I set myself goals. I still have the goal of winning a Grand Slam title,” Bencic said in an interview to the Tennismagazin in Germany. “I don’t know when and I don’t put myself under any time pressure, but it would be great before the end of my career. On the other hand, I’m already super happy with my career. Even if it’s over now, I can say that I’m mega satisfied. From a sporting point of view, the Olympic victory was the best thing I’ve experienced. It’s difficult to set a goal for next season because I don’t know what I can play yet. But I want to work my way up in the rankings.”
My biggest dream is to have a family.
Bencic said her return was faster than she expected but that she decided not to put any timeline on her comeback.
“It’s certainly much faster than I expected. I didn’t set myself a time limit at the beginning because I didn’t want to put myself under pressure in terms of time and I didn’t know what to expect. It all depended on how the birth is and how I feel. Everyone asked me when my comeback was, but I couldn’t give much information.”
The Swiss woman added that her decision to have a family was a conscious one and that she now wants to make the most of the rest of her career.
“I want to get everything out of it. I’m only 27 and still have many good years ahead of me, so it was no question for me to come back. It was a conscious decision to start a family now. Of course, it inspired me a lot to see other moms who managed to come back and play at the same level. I think it’s better to take a career break now and be able to play for a few more years than to have the pressure of having to stop at 33 or so. My biggest dream is to have a family. I thought it was better that way. Now I can play as long as I can and then have more children.”
