No 7 seed Hanna Chang edged out No 3 seed Varvara Lepchenko 6-4, 2-6, 7-5 to reach the last 4 of the Fifth Third Charleston 125 2 on Friday.
Chang, ranked No 194, will play Italian Nuria Brancaccio next.
Ahead of her victory, Hanna Chang defeated wildcard Madison Sieg (6-4, 6-3) and Liv Hovde (6-2, 6-3).
Lepchenko, ranked No 141, won against Sophie Chang (6-3, 7-5) and Russian Ekaterina Makarova (6-4, 5-7, 6-3) earlier in the tournament.
