American Louisa Chirico, the No 6 seed, edged out Romanian Irina Bara 3-6, 6-2, 7-6 (3) to reach the last 16 of the Fifth Third Charleston 125 2 on Monday evening.
Chirico, ranked No 181, will face the winner of the match between Romanian qualifier Miriam Bulgaru and Cypriot Raluka Serban next.
