Alcaraz targets Davis Cup glory for a special reason: “I really want Rafa to retire with a title”
Next week’s Davis Cup Finals will be the last event of Rafael Nadal’s career
Winning the Davis Cup is something Carlos Alcaraz has been dreaming about since he was a child but if there’s one thing he wants more, it’s to win it for Rafael Nadal.
Alcaraz will join Nadal on the Spain team for the Finals next week in Malaga, the last of Nadal’s glorious career before he officially retires.
And Alcaraz is determined to ensure he goes out with a bang.
“It is the last tournament of the year for me, probably one of the most special tournaments that I’m going to play. Last tournament of Rafa, I’ll be able to be next to him in the last moments on a tennis court for him,” Alcaraz said at the ATP Finals in Turin on Friday.
“The Davis Cup….is a tournament I really want to win one day. When I was a kid, I’d dream about winning the Davis Cup, for Spain. This year we have a really special chance to win it. I will try to help the team to win the Davis Cup for me.
“But I think it’s most important for Rafa, for his last tournament. I really want him to retire with a title. It’s going to be really, really emotional and a really special tournament for me.”
Spain take on the Netherlands in the quarter-finals on Tuesday. Nadal is named in the Spain line-up, with captain David Ferrer due to decide if he plays singles or doubles. Nadal and Alcaraz played together in doubles at the Olympics in the summer.
