Belgrade Open: Shapovalov reaches first semi-final since 2022

Canadian qualifier Denis Shapovalov won against Australian Christopher O’Connell 6-2, 6-2 to move into the last 4 of the Belgrade Open at the Belgrade Arena on Thursday.

Shapovalov, ranked No 78, will play No 4 seed Jiri Lehecka next. It will the former top 10 player’s first semi-final on the tour since October 2022.

Ahead of his win today, the Canadian beat Hungarian qualifier Marton Fucsovics (6-7 (6), 7-5, 6-1) and Portuguese Nuno Borges, the No 5 seed (6-2, 6-4).

O’Connell, ranked No 71, defeated Serb Miomir Kecmanovic (6-1, 6-1) and German Daniel Altmaier (6-3, 6-1) earlier in the week.
