Australian Christopher O’Connell moved into the quarter-finals of the Belgrade Open by winning against German Daniel Altmaier 6-3, 6-1 at the Belgrade Arena on Wednesday.

O’Connell, ranked No 71, will play the winner of the match between Canadian qualifier Denis Shapovalov and Portuguese Nuno Borges, the No 5 seed, next.

The Australian defeated Serb Miomir Kecmanovic (6-1, 6-1) ahead of his victory.

In the previous round of the Belgrade tournament, Altmaier, ranked No 93, beat Italian Luciano Darderi, the No 8 seed (7-6 (1), 6-3).
