Zeynep Sonmez moved into the final of the Mérida Open by beating Russian Alina Korneeva 7-6 (5), 6-2 at the Yucatan Country Club on Sunday evening.
Sonmez, ranked No 127, will play the winner of the match between American Ann Li and Russian Polina Kudermetova next.
Zeynep Sonmez won against Argentinian Maria Lourdes Carle, the No 6 seed (5-7, 6-1, 6-2), Frenchwoman Elsa Jacquemot (7-6 (3), 6-3) and Mexican Renata Zarazua, the top seed (3-6, 6-3, 6-4) earlier in the tournament.
In the previous rounds of the Mérida tournament, Korneeva, ranked No 254, defeated American Alycia Parks (6-3, 6-1), No 5 seed Anna Blinkova (7-5, 6-2) and Spaniard Sara Sorribes Tormo (6-3, 6-1).
