Jiangxi Open: Golubic beats 6th seed Rus to reach first semi-final in over two years
The Swiss woman will face top seed Marie Bouzkova or Kamilla Rakhimova, the No 5 seed, for a berth in the final
Switzerland’s Viktorija Golubic edged out Dutchwoman Arantxa Rus, the No 6 seed, 7-5, 4-6, 7-6 (5) in three hours and 24 minutes to move into the last four of the Jiangxi Open on Friday.
Golubic, ranked No 168, led 5-1 in the final set before Rus fought back to win six games in a row and lead 6-5. However, the Swiss held her serve to take the match into a deciding tiebreak which she won 7-5.
The Swiss improves to 2-1 lifetime over Rus and will next play the winner of the match between top seed Marie Bouzkova and Russian Kamilla Rakhimova, the No 5 seed. It is her first semi-final on the tour since Nottingham in 2022.
Ahead of her win today, the Swiss woman defeated Chinese qualifier You Xiaodi (7-5, 6-2) and Spaniard Jessica Bouzas Maneiro, the No 4 seed (6-2 ret.).
Rus, ranked No 83, won against Ukrainian Yuliia Starodubtseva (6-4, 6-7 (2), 6-3) and Linda Fruhvirtova (6-4, 7-6 (4)) in the previous rounds of the tournament. The Dutchwoman had already spent almost 5 hours on the court in her first two rounds before another marathon encounter today.
