Merida Open: Sorribes Tormo into third WTA quarter-final of the season
The Spaniard will face Alina Korneeva or No 5 seed Anna Blinkova for a spot in the semi-finals
Spaniard Sara Sorribes Tormo advanced to the quarter-finals of the Mérida Open by edging out Italian Lucrezia Stefanini 6-4, 1-6, 6-4 at the Yucatan Country Club on Thursday.
With the win, the Spaniard improved to 17-21 in 2024 in matches won/ lost.
Sorribes Tormo, ranked No 103, will face the winner of the match between Alina Korneeva and No 5 seed Anna Blinkova next. It will be her third WTA Tour quarter-final in 2024 (after Monastir and Rabat) and she will be gunning for her first semi-final on tour.
Ahead of her win today, the Spaniard won against Mexican wildcard Ana Sofia Sanchez (6-2, 6-1).
Stefanini, ranked No 163, defeated German Jule Niemeier, the No 4 seed (6-3, 6-2) in the previous round of the tournament.
