Paris Masters: Thompson beats Mannarino to reach first ATP Masters quarter-final

Australian Jordan Thompson defeated French wildcard Adrian Mannarino 7-5, 7-6 (5) to advance to the last eight of Paris Masters at the Accor Arena on Thursday.
Thompson, ranked No 28, will play the winner of the match between Frenchman Ugo Humbert, the No 15 seed, and Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz, the second seed, next. It will be the first ATP Masters quarter-final for the Australian.
Since the format’s inception in 1990, Thompson becomes only the third Australian aged 30 years and above to reach an ATP Masters 1000 quarter-final, along with Wayne Arthurs (Cincinnati 2002) and Matthew Ebden (Shanghai 2018).
In the previous rounds of the tournament, the Australian beat Spaniard Pedro Martinez Portero (6-4, 6-4) and edged out Norwegian Casper Ruud, the No 7 seed (7-6 (3), 3-6, 6-4).
Mannarino, ranked No 58, won against American Tommy Paul, the No 11 seed (6-3, 7-5) and edged out Belgian lucky loser Zizou Bergs (3-6, 6-2, 6-4) earlier in the week.
