Tokyo: 19-year-old Ishii through to maiden WTA Tour quarter-final
The qualifier will play Russian Diana Shnaider, the No 6 seed, in the next round
Japanese qualifier Sayaka Ishii beat qualifier Zeynep Sonmez 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 to move into the quarter-finals of the WTA Toray Pan Pacific Open at the Ariake Coliseum on Wednesday.
Ishii, ranked No 279 in the world, is through to her first WTA Tour quarter-final and will face Russian Diana Shnaider, the No 6 seed, next.
Ahead of her win today, the 19-year-old Japanese won against lucky loser Sara Saito (6-1, 6-1). That marked the first WTA Tour main draw win of her career.
Sonmez, ranked No 148, defeated Pole Magdalena Frech, the No 7 seed (1-6, 6-4, 6-3) in the previous round of the tournament.
