Tokyo Open: Tomova beats defending champ Kudermetova in first round

The Bulgarian will face No 6 seed Diana Shnaider in the next round

Bulgaria’s Viktoriya Tomova won against defending champion Veronika Kudermetova, of Russia, 7-6 (3), 6-3 to move into the second round of the Tokyo Open at the Ariake Coliseum on Monday.

The Bulgarian avenged a recent loss to Kudermetova in the Seoul quarter-finals and improved to 2-1 lifetime against the Russian with this win.

Tomova, ranked No 49, will face No 6 seed Diana Shnaider next. Shnaider has won their only previous meeting on the tour in straight sets.
