American Tommy Paul, the No 4 seed, defeated Serb Miomir Kecmanovic 7-6 (9), 6-2 to reach the semi-finals of the Stockholm Open at the Kungliga Tennishallen on Friday.

Paul and Kecmanovic opened their battle on an intense note as the opening set went into a tiebreak, where the Serbian saved four set points before the American took the lead after saving a set point himself.

The second set panned out differently with the world No 13 racing to a 5-0 lead before Kecmanovic converted a break point. It, however, proved too little too late as Paul secured the win to make a tour-level semi-final for the sixth time in 2024.

Paul, ranked No 13, will face the winner of the match between Russian Andrey Rublev, the top seed, and Swiss wildcard Stan Wawrinka next.

The American won against Serb qualifier Laslo Djere (6-2, 7-6 (2)) in the previous round of the Stockholm tournament.

In the previous rounds of the Stockholm tournament, Kecmanovic, ranked No 55, beat Cameron Norrie (6-4, 6-4) and edged out Chilean Nicolas Jarry, the No 5 seed (6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (2)).
