Osaka Open: Mertens books spot in second round

Belgian Elise Mertens, the No 3 seed, reached the second round of the Osaka Open by winning against Japanese wildcard Mai Hontama 6-1, 6-1 at the Utsubo Tennis Center on Tuesday.

Mertens, ranked No 27, will play the winner of the match between Australian qualifier Kimberly Birrell and Chinese Zheng Saisai next.
