American McCartney Kessler won against Japanese qualifier Ena Shibahara 6-4, 6-1 to advance to the second round of the Osaka Open at the Utsubo Tennis Center on Monday.
Kessler, ranked No 76, will play the winner of the match between German lucky loser Eva Lys and Colombian Camila Osorio next.
