Shanghai Masters: Sinner beats Medvedev to reach 11th semi-final of the season

The Italian will face the winner of the match between Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz, the No 3 seed, and No 30 seed Tomas Machac in the next round

Italian Jannik Sinner, the top seed, advanced to the last four of the Shanghai Masters by winning against Russian Daniil Medvedev, the No 5 seed and 2019 champion, 6-1, 6-4 at the Qi Zhong Tennis Center on Thursday.

Sinner hit nine aces during the match and won 63 percent of his second serve points – much better than Medvedev, who was able to win only 19 percent of his second serve points.

The Italian was able to break the Russia’s serve thrice and saved the only break point on his own serve during the quarter-final contest.

The win levels the head-to-head between the two players at 7-7 with Sinner winning seven of their last clashes.

The victory puts the Italian into his 10th ATP Masters semi-final (his first in Shanghai) and his 11th semi-final of the 2024 season.

Sinner, ranked No 1, will play the winner of the match between Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz, the No 3 seed, and No 30 seed Tomas Machac next.

With 11 top 10 wins in 2024, Sinner is tied with Carlos Alcaraz for most top 10 wins in 2024. The world No 1 also has won 19 of his last 20 matches (only loss coming to Alcaraz last week in the Beijing final) and improved his record to 63-6 this season.

Ahead of his win today, the Italian defeated Japanese Taro Daniel (6-1, 6-4), Argentinian Tomas Martin Etcheverry, the No 31 seed (6-7 (3), 6-4, 6-2) and American Ben Shelton, the No 14 seed (6-4, 7-6 (1)).

Medvedev, ranked No 5, won against Brazilian Thiago Seyboth Wild (7-5, 7-5), Italian Matteo Arnaldi, the No 29 seed (5-7, 6-4, 6-4) and Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas, the No 10 seed (7-6 (3), 6-3) in the previous rounds of the tournament.
