Wuhan Open: Wang Xinyu upsets 2nd seed Pegula to reach first WTA 1000 QF
The Chinese will face Russian Ekaterina Alexandrova for a spot in the semi-finals
China’s Wang Xinyu won against American Jessica Pegula, the second seed, 6-3, 7-5 to move into the last eight of the Wuhan Open at the Optics Valley International Tennis Center on Thursday.
Xinyu, ranked No 51, will play Russian Ekaterina Alexandrova next. This will be the first WTA 1000 Series quarter-final for the Chinese player and she becomes the second player (after Qiang Wang in 2018) from the home country to make the last eight in Wuhan.
With the win, she improves to 2-0 lifetime against Pegula, who also lost to Wang in the second round of Wimbledon this year.
Ahead of her win today, Xinyu, who is making her Wuhan main draw debut this year, defeated American Caroline Dolehide (6-4, 6-0) and edged out Italian lucky loser Lucia Bronzetti (4-6, 6-2, 6-4).
Pegula, ranked No 3, benefited from the retirement of Russian Anastasia Potapova (6-2, 2-0) in the previous round of the tournament.
