Wuhan Open: Sabalenka advances to last 16

Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka, the top seed, won against Katerina Siniakova 6-4, 6-4 to reach the last 16 of the Wuhan Open at the Optics Valley International Tennis Center on Wednesday.

Siniakova challenged Sabalenka hard over their 90-minute-long battle, creating eight break points, converting one, and saving eight.

However, the Belarusian eventually proved too good and earned the win with four break-point conversions, also benefitting from Siniakova’s seven double faults.

“I’m super happy to be back in Wuhan,” the two-time defending champion said after the win. “Thank you so much for your support. I missed Wuhan and happy to back, yeah, hopefully I’ll show my best tennis on each match.”

Sabalenka, ranked No 2, will play Kazakh Yulia Putintseva next.

In the previous round of the Wuhan tournament, Siniakova, ranked No 37, defeated Filipino wildcard Alexandra Eala (6-3, 6-1).
