Shanghai Masters: Fritz makes pre-quarters

American Taylor Fritz, the No 7 seed, advanced to the pre-quarter-finals of the Shanghai Masters by winning against Japanese qualifier Yosuke Watanuki 6-3, 6-4 at the Qi Zhong Tennis Center on Tuesday.

Fritz completed the win against Watanuki in 76 minutes with three break-point conversions, hitting 10 aces and 23 winners.

Fritz, ranked No 7, will face the winner of the match between No 33 seed Jiri Lehecka and Dane Holger Rune, the No 12 seed, next.

Ahead of his victory, the American beat French qualifier Terence Atmane (7-6 (4), 7-6 (5)).

Watanuki, ranked No 336, edged out Russian Pavel Kotov (6-7 (6), 6-4, 7-5) and defeated American Brandon Nakashima, the No 32 seed (7-6 (4), 6-3) earlier in the tournament.
