Arthur Fils beat Ugo Humbert 5-7, 7-6 (6), 6-3 to win the Japan Open tournament at the Ariake Colosseum in Tokyo on Tuesday.

The 20-year-old is the youngest champion in Tokyo since Jimmy Arias won in 1982 at the age of 18.

Fils, ranked No 24, defeated American Taylor Fritz, the top seed (6-4, 3-6, 6-3), Italian Matteo Berrettini (6-7 (5), 0-0 ret.), American Ben Shelton, the No 8 seed (7-5, 6-7 (5), 7-6 (2)) and Dane Holger Rune, the No 6 seed (7-6 (8), 7-6 (10)) earlier in the tournament.

He is the first Frenchman to beat four Top 20-ranked players at one event since Jo-Wilfried Tsonga did it in Toronto a decade ago.

In the previous rounds of the Tokyo Open, Humbert, ranked No 18, beat Japanese wildcard Shintaro Mochizuki (6-1, 6-2), American Brandon Nakashima (6-3, 6-2), Jack Draper (7-5, 2-1 ret.) and Tomas Machac (6-3, 3-6, 6-2).
