Japan Open: Michelsen moves into last eight

American qualifier Alex Michelsen advanced to the last eight of the Japan Open by beating Australian qualifier Christopher O’Connell 6-1, 6-4 at the Ariake Colosseum in Tokyo on Saturday.

Michelsen, ranked No 49, will face Tomas Machac next.

The 20-year-old American won against Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas, the No 4 seed (4-6, 6-1, 6-2) in the previous round of the Tokyo Open.

In the previous round of the Tokyo Open, O’Connell, ranked No 79, defeated Argentinian Tomas Martin Etcheverry (6-4, 7-6 (5)).
