Chengdu Open: Musetti through to third final of the season

Musetti will face the winner of the match between German Yannick Hanfmann and Chinese Juncheng Shang for the title

Top seed Lorenzo Musetti, of Italy, reached the final of the Chengdu Open by beating Russian qualifier Alibek Kachmazov 6-4, 6-2 at the Sichuan International Tennis Center on Monday.

Musetti saved all three break points against his serve in the match while converting three of eight break point chances on the Kachmazov serve.

The Italian, ranked No 19, will play the winner of the second semi-final between German Yannick Hanfmann and Chinese Juncheng Shang on Tuesday.

Ahead of his win today, 22-year-old Musetti edged out Australian Christopher O’Connell (6-7 (5), 6-4, 7-6 (4)) and won against Frenchman Adrian Mannarino, the No 5 seed (6-2, 5-7, 6-2).

This will be his fifth ATP singles final and his third of the 2024 season. The Italian will be aiming to win his third ATP singles title on Tuesday.

Musetti has now won 26 of his last 33 matches on the tour since the start of the grass court season in June. This also marked his 36th win of the season on the tour – his personal career-best.

Kachmazov, ranked No 179, won against American Aleksandar Kovacevic (6-4, 7-6 (7)), Japanese Taro Daniel (7-6 (1), 6-1) and Chilean Nicolas Jarry, the No 3 seed (6-3, 6-4) earlier in the tournament.
