WTA rankings: Sakkari plummets, title propels Sramkova to career-high

This Monday’s new WTA rankings have seen Rebecca Sramkova hit a career-high this week off the back of her maiden WTA title. Others have not fared so well, with Maria Sakkari undergoing a dramatic drop and Victoria Azarenka falling out of the top 20.

The top of women’s tennis remains steady this week, but there are a few changes down the bottom of the top 10. Here’s how the WTA top 10 looks this Monday:

2. Aryna Sabalenka – 8,716 points
3. Jessica Pegula – 6,220 points
4. Elena Rybakina – 5,871 points
5. Jasmine Paolini – 5,348 points
6. Coco Gauff – 4,983 points
7. Qinwen Zheng – 3,920 points
8. Emma Navarro – 3,698 points
9. Danielle Collins – 3,178 points
10. Barbora Krejcikova – 3,161 points

The most noticeable absence from the WTA top 10 is Sakkari. The Greek has not played since she withdrew injured during her first round match at the US Open. This Monday, however, the 1000 points that she won at the 2023 Guadalajara Open fell off her ranking total, sending her plummeting down the rankings.

Having been world No 9 this time last week, Sakkari has fallen eight spots to No 17 this week. She is in danger of dropping further as well, with 400 points to defend over the next fortnight after making the semi-final at last year’s Japan Open and quarter-finals at the China Open. 

She has opted not to compete in the Asian swing in aid of rehabbing her shoulder, and could drop as low as No 24 over the coming weeks.

Sramkova makes huge jump, Raducanu as well

The biggest mover of the week is Sramkova, who jumps 41 places from No 102 in the world to a new career-high of No 61. The Slovak’s rise comes off the back of her maiden WTA title in Thailand, where she powered to victory with a 6-4, 6-4 straight sets win over Laura Siegemund.

Other career highs include Elina Avaneyan (47), Erika Andreeva (67), Renata Zarazua (74) and Oliva Gadecki (84).

Britain Emma Raducanu also made progress in her climb back up the WTA rankings. The former US Open champion strung together consecutive wins to make the quarter-finals of the Korea Open before withdrawing after losing the first set to Daria Kasatkina. She jumped 16 places in the rankings, however, and moves to the brink of the world’s top 50 at No 54.

Xiyu Wang and Caroline Dolehide were not so fortunate. The pair both had big hits to their rankings, with Wang dropping 33 spots to No 95 and Dolehide falling 53 places to No 98. Azarenka also took a fall, losing four places to slip out of the top 20 to No 23 in the world.
