Mannarino reaches Chengdu Open quarter-finals

Adrian Mannarino edged out Yi Zhou 7-6 (3), 2-6, 6-4 on Saturday

Frenchman Adrian Mannarino, the No 5 seed, edged out Chinese wildcard Yi Zhou 7-6 (3), 2-6, 6-4 to advance to the last eight of the Chengdu Open at the Sichuan International Tennis Center on Saturday.

Mannarino faced stern resistance from Zhou during the nearly three-hour-long battle.

The Chinese fared better than Mannarino on break points with four conversions against the Frenchman’s three. Zhou also registered 17 more winner than his tally of 22.

However, the world No 46 played better than Zhou, who committed 54 unforced errors, during crunch moments to secure the tough battle.

Mannarino, ranked No 46, will play the winner of the match between Italian Lorenzo Musetti, the top seed, and Australian Christopher O’Connell next.

In the previous round of the Chengdu tournament, the 36-year-old Frenchman won against qualifier Terence Atmane (6-7 (9), 6-1, 6-3).

Yi Zhou benefited from the abandonment of Chun-Hsin Tseng (2-6, 6-1, 3-1) in the first round of the Chengdu tournament.
