Korea Open: Shnaider downs Kostyuk to make semi-finals

The Russian will play compatriot Daria Kasatkina for a spot in the final

Russian Diana Shnaider, the No 4 seed, beat Ukrainian Marta Kostyuk, the No 5 seed, 7-6 (7), 6-3 to reach the semi-finals of the Korea Open at the Olympic Park Tennis Center in Seoul on Saturday.

Shnaider and Kostyuk battle hard on the court for more than an hour, 30 minutes. The match saw nine break-point conversions, with the Russian secure the extra one.

She also benefitted from the Ukrainian spraying 11 double faults during a sub-par serving display. Also, Shnaider recovered from a 3-6 deficit and later saved another set point in the first-set tiebreaker.

Shnaider, ranked No 16, will face Russian Daria Kasatkina, the top seed, next.

In the previous round of the Seoul tournament, the 20-year-old Russian won against Canadian qualifier Carol Zhao (6-3, 6-3).

Kostyuk, ranked No 18, won against Dutchwoman Arantxa Rus (6-3, 6-1) and qualifier Heather Watson (6-2, 6-2) in the previous rounds of the Seoul tournament.
