Japanese Mai Hontama advanced to the last 16 of the Thailand Open 2 by stunning No 1 seed Dayana Yastremska on Tuesday. Hontama defeated Yastremska 7-6 (4), 7-5 in the opening round.
The two fought for more than two hours across two sets. Yastremska converted four break points but the Japanese edged out with five.
Notably in the second set, Hontama denied the Ukrainian four set points before breaking her in the 10th game of the rain-affected encounter.
Hontama, ranked No 130, will face wildcard Lanlana Tararudee next.
