Patrick McEnroe: Team World “plan on going out with a three-peat” at Laver Cup

This year’s Laver Cup marks a passing of the torch in the event’s short history, with captains John McEnroe and Bjorn Borg leading their respective teams for the final time this week in Berlin. Along with McEnroe, his younger brother Patrick will also step down as the vice-captain of Team World.

While Team Europe have assembled a star-studded lineup with five top-10 players, Patrick is determined to conclude his tenure with a victory.

“We’re extremely excited that we get to have our final one here, we plan on going out with a three-peat having won the last two years,” the American said on Monday to media in Berlin.

“There’s a little bit of sadness about this final one for us, because it’s been such an amazing run. It’s been an unbelievable ride for us and a privilege for us to be part of this incredible event. To be part of it with Bjorn [Borg] and Thomas Enqvist has been a great experience.

“One of the great things about the Laver Cup to me has always been that you get 12 of the best players in the world on one court in one weekend, that’s really unique to the sport.” 

The Laver Cup, which is celebrating its seventh edition in 2024, started with Team Europe winning the first four editions – largely thanks to impressive showings by the Big Three of Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic.

However, Team America have won the past two editions, including a dominant 13-2 scoreline in the 2023 Laver Cup.

“I think we go in as the underdog this year,” added Patrick. 

“We know Team Europe is coming in loaded, I’m sure they’ll have the home crowd behind them, but we’re very excited.”

While Team Europe has five top-10 players, Team World has just one in Taylor Fritz. Two of their six players are even outside of the world’s top 30.

Play begins this Friday, and will unfold over the course of three days in Berlin.
