Alert- Defending champion Djokovic ousted by Popyrin at US Open
Alexei Popyrin edged out Novak Djokovic 6-4, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 on Friday. He will play Frances Tiafoe in the next round
Australian Alexei Popyrin, the No 28 seed, edged out Serb Novak Djokovic, the second seed, 6-4, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 to reach the last 16 of the US Open at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York on Friday.
This is notably Popyrin’s first win against Djokovic, who held a 3-0 lead in the head-to-head before the match.
Popyrin, ranked No 28, will play No 20 seed Frances Tiafoe next.
The Australian defeated SoonWoo Kwon (7-5, 6-2, 6-3) and Spaniard Pedro Martinez Portero (6-2, 6-4, 6-0) ahead of his victory.
Earlier in the tournament, Djokovic, the defending champion, won against qualifier Radu Albot (6-2, 6-2, 6-4) and Laslo Djere (6-4, 6-4, 2-0 ret.).
