Cleveland Open: Top seed Haddad Maia into semis to face Siniakova

The top seed defeated France’s Clara Burel 6-2, 6-2 in the quarter-finals on Thursday

Brazil’s Beatriz Haddad Maia, the top seed, advanced to the semi-finals of the Cleveland Open by winning against Frenchwoman Clara Burel 6-2, 6-2 in one hour and 15 minutes at Jacobs Pavilion on Thursday.

Haddad Maia, ranked No 23, will face No 3 seed Katerina Siniakova next. This is her first semi-final on the tour since February and she has yet to drop a set this week.

Earlier in the tournament, the Brazilian defeated Swiss qualifier Viktorija Golubic (6-3, 7-5) and Spaniard Cristina Bucsa (6-2, 6-1).

Burel, ranked No 58, won against American lucky loser Elvina Kalieva (6-3, 6-2) and American Sofia Kenin, the No 8 seed (6-4, 6-3) in the previous rounds of the tournament.
