Cleveland Open: Stearns knocks out defending champ Sorribes Tormo to reach last eight
The sixth-seeded American will face Katerina Siniakova, the No 3 seed, next
American Peyton Stearns, the No 6 seed, won against Spaniard Sara Sorribes Tormo 6-3, 6-2 to advance to the quarter-finals of the Cleveland Open at Jacobs Pavilion on Wednesday.
Stearns, ranked No 47 in the world, won her maiden WTA title in Rabat earlier this year and also reached the quarter-finals of the WTA 1000 event in Toronto recently. She will play No 3 seed Katerina Siniakova next.
The 22-year-old American beat Japanese Moyuka Uchijima (6-0, 1-6, 6-1) ahead of her win today.
In the previous round of the tournament, Sorribes Tormo, ranked No 73, defeated Chinese Yafan Wang (6-4, 6-1). The Spaniard has struggled on tour in recent months, winning only two matches in her last eight tournaments (including the Olympics).
