Eubanks outlasts Safiullin to reach Winston-Salem quarter-finals
Chris Eubanks held off Roman Safiullin in a tight three-setter on Wednesday in Winston-Salem. Eubanks will face Alex Michelsen in the last eight.
Chris Eubanks secured his spot in the Winston-Salem Open quarter-finals by beating Roman Safiullin 6-3, 1-6, 7-6 (8) on Wednesday night.
Eubanks saved three break points in the third set and came back from 5-3 down in the tiebreak to advance after two hours and six minutes. The American fought off match points at 5-6 and 7-8 in the ‘breaker before converting his second match point at 9-8.
It will be an all-American showdown between Eubanks and Alex Michelsen on Thursday.
The world No 120 has struggled since making a run to the Wimbledon quarter-finals in 2023. His third ATP quarter-final appearance in 2024 has also come at the expense of Adam Walton (2-6, 7-5, 6-4) and Hugo Gaston (6-1, 6-4).
