Magdalena Frech, the No 9 seed, edged out Argentinian Nadia Podoroska 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 to reach the second round of the Monterrey Open at Sonoma Club on Wednesday night.
Frech, ranked No 45, will play Israeli lucky loser Lina Glushko next.
