Cincinnati Masters: Rune sees off Borges challenge for spot in round of 16

Dane Holger Rune, the No 15 seed, beat Portuguese qualifier Nuno Borges 6-3, 7-6 (8) to advance to the last 16 of the Cincinnati Masters at the Lindner Family Tennis Center on Thursday evening.

Rune, ranked No 16, will play the winner of the match between Frenchman Gael Monfils and Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz, the second seed, next.

In the previous round of the Cincy Open, the 21-year-old Dane edged out Italian wildcard Matteo Berrettini (2-6, 6-1, 6-4).

Borges, ranked No 39, won against Frenchman Adrian Mannarino (6-4, 3-6, 6-1) in the previous round of the Cincy Open.
