Lucky loser Avanesyan knocks out Ostapenko in Cincinnati
Elina Avanesyan won against Jelena Ostapenko 2-6, 6-2, 6-2 on Thursday evening and will face the winner of the match between Russian Liudmila Samsonova, the No 10 seed, and Pole Magda Linette in the next round
Russian lucky loser Elina Avanesyan advanced to the last 16 of the Western & Southern Open by winning against Latvian Jelena Ostapenko, the No 8 seed, 2-6, 6-2, 6-2 at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Cincinnati on Thursday.
Avanesyan, ranked No 60, will play the winner of the match between Russian Liudmila Samsonova, the No 10 seed, and Pole Magda Linette next.
Ahead of her victory, the 21-year-old Russian defeated Canadian wildcard Bianca Andreescu (6-4, 7-5).
