Back with a bang! Lehecka upsets Medvedev in Cincinnati
The Czech will play American Frances Tiafoe in the next round
Czech Jiri Lehecka advanced to the last 16 of the Cincinnati Masters with an upset win over Russian Daniil Medvedev, the No 4 seed, on Wednesday evening.
Playing his first tournament since Madrid due to a back injury, Lehecka won 7-6 (2), 6-4 at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Cincinnati. This was his third top-five win of the season and his second over Medvedev in 2024.
The world No 35 meets American Frances Tiafoe next. Lehecka defeated Argentinian Mariano Navone (7-6 (3), 6-3) in the first round of the tournament and now improves to 11-3 in Masters 1000 events this year.
Medvedev, a former champion here, also lost his opening match in Montreal last week to Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, which puts him on a three-match losing streak on the ATP Tour.
