WTA Toronto: Samsonova beats Mertens to set up all-Russian quarter-final against Shnaider
The No 6 seed will face fellow Russian Diana Shnaider, the No 14 seed, in the last eight
Russian Liudmila Samsonova, the No 6 seed, won against Belgian Elise Mertens 6-2, 6-4 to reach the last eight of the WTA National Bank Open at the Aviva Centre in Toronto on Friday.
Samsonova, ranked No 13, will play fellow Russian Diana Shnaider, the No 14 seed, next after the left-hander stunned American Coco Gauff, the top seed, in another round-of-16 clash on Friday.
Samsonova, a runner-up at this tournament last year, defeated Japanese qualifier Moyuka Uchijima (6-4, 6-2) earlier in the week. This is her fourth WTA quarter-final of the 2024 season.
Mertens, ranked No 35, won against American qualifier Katie Volynets (6-3, 6-1) and Japanese wildcard Naomi Osaka (6-3, 6-4) in previous rounds in the tournament.
