WTA Toronto: Ostapenko overcomes Badosa in three sets
The Latvian will play American lucky loser Taylor Townsend in the next round
Latvian Jelena Ostapenko, the No 4 seed, moved into the last 16 of the Toronto Masters by winning against Spaniard Paula Badosa 3-6, 7-6 (3), 6-2 at the Aviva Centre on Thursday.
Badosa struggled with blisters throughout the match and required a medical timeout during the match. Last week, she won her first title since January 2022, claiming the Citi Open in Washington.
This was the Latvian’s third win over Badosa in five career meetings. It was also her 29th win of the season and the former French Open champion is aiming to win her first WTA 1000 Series title.
Ostapenko, ranked No 11, will play American lucky loser Taylor Townsend next. The Latvian holds a 1-0 edge in their career head-to-head.
Badosa, ranked No 40, defeated Dane Clara Tauson (6-1, 6-4) in the previous round of the Rogers Cup.
