Atlanta Open: Thompson outlasts Shang to make final

Australian Jordan Thompson, the No 4 seed, moved into the final of the Atlanta Open by winning against Chinese qualifier Juncheng Shang 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 at the Atlanta Athletic Club on Saturday.

Thompson, ranked No 41, will face the winner of the match between Japanese Yoshihito Nishioka and Frenchman Arthur Rinderknech next.

The Australian defeated French lucky loser Harold Mayot (6-2, 7-5) and Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, the No 5 seed (7-6 (5), 4-6, 6-3) ahead of his victory.

In the previous rounds of the Atlanta Open, Shang, ranked No 89, won against American wildcard Andres Martin (6-1, 6-1), American Ben Shelton, the top seed (7-6 (6), 6-4) and Australian Max Purcell, the No 8 seed (7-6 (3), 6-4).
