Nordea Open: Monteiro stuns Casper Ruud to make quarter-finals
Thiago Monteiro defeated Casper Ruud 6-3, 6-3 and will play the winner of the match between Pavel Kotov and Duje Ajdukovic in the next round
Thiago Monteiro stunned Casper Ruud, the second seed, 6-3, 6-3 to move into the quarter-finals of the Nordea Open.
Monteiro was excellent throughout, hitting with precision and power to frequently puncture the Norwegian’s usually watertight defences on clay.
The Brazilian broke three times in total, while Ruud could not muster a single break and only earned one break point across the contest.
The Norwegian began his campaign in Sweden brightly, partnering Rafael Nadal to win in the opening round of the doubles two days ago, but he was comprehensively outplayed today.
Monteiro, ranked No 85, will go on to face the winner of the match between Russian Pavel Kotov, the No 8 seed, and Croat qualifier Duje Ajdukovic next.
The Brazilian beat Argentinian Federico Coria (6-1, 6-3) in the previous round of the Swedish Open.
