The US Open is held in New York City, in the borough of Queens, at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. The site has 22 tennis courts, including Arthur Ashe Stadium and Louis Armstrong Stadium.

Former Wimbledon finalist Ons Jabeur withdrew from the US Open on the 23rd of August due to a shoulder injury.

The Tunisian said on Instagram:

“I am truly said to announce that my shoulder won’t recover in time for the US Open. I feel I need to give 100 percent and today its not possible yet.”

Other players to withdraw include Emil Ruusuvuori and Cam Norrie, who have also both struggled with injury concerns in 2024.

Who have been awarded wildcards for the 2024 US Open?

2020 men’s champion Dominic Thiem and 2016 winner Stan Wawrinka were among the men’s wildcard entries announced by the tournament. Other men’s singles wildcards have been awarded to Americans Chris Eubanks, Zachary Svajda, Learner Tien and Matthew Forbes, and France’s Alexandre Muller and Australia’s Tristan Schoolkate.

On the women’s side, two-time former champion Naomi Osaka and 2019 champion Bianca Andreescu were awarded wildcards along with Americans Amanda Anisimova, McCartney Kessler, Alexa Noel and Iva Jovic, and France’s Chloe Paquet and Australia’s Taylah Preston.

Yes. The US Open 2024 will make use of the video replay, as was the case at last year’s tournament. This year, however, organisers have announced an expanded use of the video replay, being used on eight courts instead of only five (as was the case in 2023).

It will be added to Courts 7, 11 and 12, to go alongside the pre-existing use on Ashe, Armstrong, Grandstand, Stadium 17 and Court 5.

“We assessed the process and the infrastructure needs, and we felt that going to eight courts this year was the right move,” US Open tournament referee Jake Garner said. “It covers about 75% of our singles matches.”

Who are the past winners of the US Open?

First held in 1881 as the US National men’s singles and doubles championships in Newport, Rhode Island, the tournament has been held every year for the past 142 years. The women’s singles draw was held for the first time in 1887, followed by women’s doubles in 1889 and then the mixed doubles event in 1892. The tournament has been held at nine different locations, moving to Forest Hills, New York at the start of the Open Era and then to its current location in Flushing Meadows in 1978.

Past winners include six-time champion Serena Williams, five-time champion Roger Federer, four-time champion Rafael Nadal, four-time champion Novak Djokovic and two-time champions Naomi Osaka and Venus Williams.

The record for most women’s singles title in the Open Era is jointly held by Chris Evert and Serena Williams, who both won six titles each. On the men’s side, Federer, Pete Sampras and Jimmy Connors are tied for the Open Era record with five titles each.

A record $75 million in prize money will be on offer for the 2024 US Open, which is a 15 percent increase from 2023. 

The men’s and women’s singles champions each earned $3.6 million each (up from $3 million), while players losing in the first round at Flushing Meadows will earn $100,000, a 23 percent increase from 12 months ago.

Who is the Tournament Director?
