It has been a vertitable French fete at Wimbledon in 2024.

And Lucky Loser Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard doesn’t want the fun to stop.

The 20-year-old served his way past Finn Emil Ruusuvuori 4-6, 6-2, 7-6 (5), 6-4 at the All England Club on Saturday afternoon to become the first lucky loser to reach the round of 16 in the men’s singles draw since 1995.

Mpetshi Perricard also became the 4th Frenchman in the Open Era to reach the round of 16 on his
Wimbledon debut – after Sebastian Grosjean (1998), Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (2007) and Ugo Humbert (2019).

Also joining Mpetshi Perricard in the round of 16 are 20-year-old Arthur Fils and Ugo Humbert. Quentin Halys, meanwhile, is still battling Holger Rune and leading two sets to one. If Halys prevails the French quartet will have matched the all-time record for French men to reach the round of 16 at the same Wimbledon.

The Open Era record for most French players to reach the men’s singles round of 16 at Wimbledon is 4 – in 2016, when Richard Gasquet, Nicolas Mahut, Lucas Pouille and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga all reached the last 16 here.

Mpetshi Perricard, ranked No 58, will face Lorenzo Musetti, the No 25 seed, next.

Earlier in the tournament, the 20-year-old Frenchman beat American Sebastian Korda, the No 20 seed (7-6 (5), 6-7 (4), 7-6 (6), 6-7 (4), 6-3) and Japanese Yoshihito Nishioka (6-4, 6-1, 6-2).

Ruusuvuori, ranked No 87, won against American Mackenzie McDonald (7-6 (6), 4-6, 5-7, 7-6 (6), 6-3) and Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas, the No 11 seed (7-6 (6), 7-6 (10), 3-6, 6-3) in the previous rounds of The Championships.
