Zverev survives injury scare to remain undefeated against Norrie, reaches last 16 at Wimbledon

German Alexander Zverev, the No 4 seed, reached the last 16 of Wimbledon by defeating Cameron Norrie 6-4, 6-4, 7-6 (15) at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in London on Saturday.

The victory marks Zverev’s sixth victory over Norrie in six encounters.

“It’s his favourite surface, he’s a Wimbledon semi-finalist,” said Zverev. “I knew that I had to play at my highest level. I’m extremely happy with the performance, I’m extremely happy with my game.”

The victory did come at a cost for Zverev. He appeared to injure his knee during the fifth game of the second set, as he slipped and hyper-extended the left knee. He needed a few minutes but was able to recover and get through the match despite the issue.

“I do feel like a cow on ice sometimes,” Zverev said. “I do feel restricted in some of the movements. I will check it out to see what it is. I’m pleased that I was able to continue playing the way I did – today if I would have dropped in my level I would have no chance against Cam.”

Zverev, ranked No 4, will play the winner of the match between American Taylor Fritz, the No 13 seed, and Chilean Alejandro Tabilo, the No 24 seed, next.

The German won against Spaniard Roberto Carballes Baena (6-2, 6-4, 6-2) and American Marcos Giron (6-2, 6-1, 6-4) ahead of his victory.

In the previous rounds of The Championships, Norrie, ranked No 42, won against Argentinian Facundo Diaz Acosta (7-5, 7-5, 6-3) and No 28 seed Jack Draper (7-6 (3), 6-4, 7-6 (6)).
